Thoughts on the update. I haven’t posted recently since I didn’t think that me just ranting on a website would be interesting to people, but it looks like my lack of updates has been noticed.

Well, let’s start with the bad first. The first thing that’s annoyed me a lot was the fact that the weapons from the update are hard to obtain now. The crafting recipes have been purposely made expensive in terms of items so that people would get frustrated into buying the new stuff. Most recipes ask for two reclaimed, and the demoboots require the new soldier boots. This just feels insulting to anyone that’s been playing the game recently because their drops have been capped for the week too. Feels like another cash-in.

In the long run I think free to play is going to damage TF2. They’ve said they’ll be keeping an eye on people who use F2P as an unlimited source of accounts to be used for hacking on TF2, but let’s face it, the only thing VAC has going for it is the threat of losing the ability to play multiple games online. There’s also plugins already out that only let premium players join servers. This is going to splinter the community, which might not have fun consequences.

On the flip side F2P means tons of newbies on the servers. It feels like playing TF2 years ago when people were still figuring everything out. This is probably going to get boring fast, but who knows, maybe it’s just a great time to try out that ridiculous loadout you were thinking of and do stupid things while getting away with it.

Speaking of stupid things, new patches always introduce new bugs. The demoman can now cancel his charge and retain his energy, and he can charge midair. There’s a fun little bug that’s sort of hard to do that lets you leap across the map at high speeds. There’s also an easier thing to do which involves aircharging into an incline, but I’ll get to those later.

Can’t think of a lot else now. The main thing on my mind is just GIMME THOSE DAMN WEAPONS, VALVE

That is if you don’t count the update before it which was exclusively hats. Ah, just joking, at least Valve noticed they were focusing too much on the wrong things.

Meanwhile there’s rumors Portal 2 may be coming out very early – like 7 hours from the time of this post early.

Someone tipped me off about this one. Remember those servers where you could load up custom models like hats or other doodads? An enterprising fellow came up with the idea of charging for that using donations. Oh wait, the site’s apparently using everything without asking for permission from people and going against what I think Valve really wanted to prevent. If I remember correctly, that’s why Valve broke the equipment plugin for Sourcemod along with twelve others.

The TF2 community is kind of humorous right now in it’s current state. What’s even funnier is that they took one of my worst models and appraised it at 4 dollars. I mean, I’d hand it out for a tenth of that price – look at those horrible proportions and textures!

I wouldn’t normally talk about the exclusive TF2 things you’d get for preordering RIFT, but apparently the afterburn on the new axe lasts forever due to a bug. Or it’s intentional. The good news is that we’ll be able to craft the new items after March. The players who preordered the items will get a ‘genuine’ tag and a green name on them. The funny thing is that the genuine tag goes away if you trade the item.

Late edit: As you might’ve read in the comments, the items don’t lose their status after being traded. Not like this is a good thing.

By Jove, a new video!

A few comments on it, I guess. I started making the video before New Years, but I forgot why I kept delaying it over and over. You’ll notice that the demoman still had 100hp when he equipped it back then, and I sort of liked that. Now with the new change the demo effectively starts with 87 hp, but he takes half falling damage. It’s like they promote bad jumps instead of giving folks an incentive to use controlled, low angle jumps.

Well, it’s not like you get a good k/d with this setup anyway. You can substitute the sticky launcher for the jumper, since after you splode your nade you’ll want to get back to base soon anyway. It’s all good fun either way.

You might’ve noticed something new in your steam library lately, besides those games from the deals a few days back. Some time ago Valve announced that it was using a closed beta to test out new weapon ideas and other concepts, but Thursday they’ve made it public, albeit a bit limited.

Basically all you do is install the game, and you can play around with two map versions and three new natascha variants. They’ve nerfed ol’ natty quite hard for some reason, it never seemed overpowered, but people complained a lot about it. Must be something about the fact that you just die over the same distance only slower. You also receive all the weapons from the start, but you don’t get any random drops. Should be worth a try.
