Apparently Valve loves Minecraft. If you haven’t heard about it, it’s a sandbox type game where you mine things so you can build things. Everything’s represented with blocks. Okay, I kind of stuck at explaining things properly so have a video. Last time I checked the game was a free alpha, but you could ‘preorder’ the game and get access to the more interesting infdev mode. At around 13 bucks it’s not so bad, the game gets updated frequently and there’s always new things to try.
Also, slow news days ahead, I’m going to the beach till August 12. I will have some net access but I don’t know how much time I’ll have.

If you’ve played a lot of GoldSrc mods you surely must’ve heard about Firearms. If not, think of CS style gameplay without the round/bomb game modes and a lot more realism. From what I remember years ago the idea is you’d have a lot of guns, fun loadouts, and an interesting damage system. You also had perks which allowed you to splint broken legs or fire mortars at targets designated by teammates. A bit more complex than your average shooter, but I enjoyed that complexity.
The last things I recall from it’s sequel, Firearms Source, were the model showcases, probably before any actual code was put down. I thought the mod just lost momentum and got forgotten (like some other mod I wish had made the cut), but today I was surprised by this video.
It’s free, it’s out, so it’s worth a shot. Go get the mod now.

There’s an exploit in Alien Swarm right now that allows you to easily level up using demos. The fun thing is that this is like the third time I’ve seen this bug in multiplayer in a source engine game. You just record a demo before you end a level, and if you replay it you can re-earn the XP you get at the screen. Theoretically you could earn achievements this way or use some other guy’s demo that went through insane to get a lot of XP at once. Or maybe SAM works on it too.
On a more interesting note, you can mod the game just like you would TF2 (edit: Nevermind, it’s got VPKs). Someone’s already made a mod that makes the rifle sound like the pulse rifle from AvP. The scanner’s modded too, real nice. With a few console commands you can even play the game in first person. For a free game this is really nice.
EDIT: Well, a few hours after this post, Valve released an ASW patch that fixed the XP bug. Sorry for getting you all excited.

A new Valve game, Alien Swarm is out. From the gameplay trailer, it looks fun. It’s a top-down 4 player coop game, you might remember it as a UT2004 mod. I never played it, but really, it looks interesting.
Also, it’s free.
Also, they’re giving out the source code and tools for free.
It’s dangerous to go alone, take this.
EDIT: Also also also, one of the achievements in Alien Swarm gives you a hat in TF2. Valve, you sneaky bastards.

So, new TF2 blog update, they’re doing a thing with TF2maps.net. Valve is giving one lucky mapper the chance of having their work in an official TF2 map. What’s this exactly mean? A mapper at Valve probably isn’t feeling like finishing a map, so now they’re getting the community to do it. The pay for this? Nothing, really, they just get mentioned somewhere.
Yes, for the rest of us this does mean more free stuff, but it does seem kind of funny that Valve can just get the community to do any kind of content with the promise of some TF2-related reward. Sure you get your name up there somewhere but work like this usually gets paid in real money.

Well the polycount winners have been announced, but as usual the page is getting hammered so hard even getting any response from the server is difficult. Valve sort of saw this coming, so they linked to the individual threads of the winners. That are on the same dying server.
That’s okay though, you can see the winners on the steam forums in threads like these.
Nice update and all, but I just want to see the weapons stats now.
Also this little quip here
Out of the 70 or so entries that Valve received, Robin tells me that nearly half of the entries are of a high enough quality to be shipped in future updates without much work needed on Valve side.
Made me laugh. Why bother working on content when you’ve got a community just itching to do it for free?

I think I had a good idea of what to write today but that seems to have flown out the window. Guess I’ve been playing too much TF2, even though the engie update’s already getting a bit boring for me.
But on the other hand I updated the crit kill notices thing to work with the engie update. I’d link it on FPSB too but it seems to be down right now. You can still get it off here though.
Oh yes, the comments reminded me that not surprisingly the polycount winners haven’t been announced yet. I’m calling Saturday, any takers?

Somehow this isn’t as bad as the other updates.
Edit: Wrangler’s probably the most fun of them all. Sentry jumping is awesome.
The robohand is great on more open maps such as gravelpit, but if you’re going for l3 sentries get the new wrench as soon as you can. Who cares about a little fire vulnerability when you can make invisible spies shit blood everywhere.

This wrench business is getting out of hand. I just want them to get on with it so I can see what the next unlock is. The pistol replacement is nice, I never liked the idea of having something to control your sentry but raising a shield around it and doubling it’s fire rate made it sound interesting.
I wonder if the PDQ is the next unlock? Seems a bit too obvious.
EDIT: Oh dear, someone fucked up. The comments are even…better? I’m not even sure, everything about this is horrible.
Check the comments below for a chatlog on what’s happening. My favorite part is where DF reveals that drop times were just predetermined all along. Cool random system you’ve got there, Valve.

100 people? Bah.
Just to clarify, that’s just a log page. You don’t get anything by clicking there. The wrench drops are also random, and when there’s less than 100 wrenches left you shouldn’t expect to get anything anyway.
