An update introduced to Team Fortress 2 today has done a complete 180 from Valve’s original intentions of random unlocks and has now introduced milestones like the original system for unlocks. Not only that, but they’re being fairly kind about it: You only need 5, 11 and 17 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd milestones respectively, instead of the usual 10, 16 and 22. Looks like Valve has finally caved in to the massive amounts of idling and criticism. You do, however, still need to play the game mindlessly until a mystical dice roll decides “Hey, you can have a new hat for absolutely no reason!”. Such innovations Gabe!

Despite being a fairly lesser-known mod for Half-Life, anybody who played it back in its hayday would find it difficult not to smile at the mere mention of Natural Shiveconceptelection.

A magnificent project, not only because something so high quality and polished could come to the public, for free no less, from a bunch of bedroom coders and modders, but because it did something that had rarely been done before, and did it really well: Multiplayer First Person shooter with a healthy dash of Real Time Strategy.

The game is a simple premise of Aliens versus Marines (In space!), with one marine player acting as the commander, essentially ordering players, building structures, and researching and distributing upgrades. The aliens on the other hand prefer the socialist approach, with resources being earned into individual player’s pools which can be used to buy upgrades and evolutions, with some players evolving to builder aliens that create small structures for the team.

So after several years of development, hampered by financial problems halfway through, the sequel to this glorious gem of gaming has been announced to be released this Fall (Autumn to us Europeans), along with a teaser trailer which er, doesn’t really explain a lot other than fapping material for old NS players.

The game can also be pre-ordered with one of two packages: A standard preorder for $20 which provides the game as soon as it’s out, and access to the beta. Or you can buy the ’special’ pre-order for $40, which also throws in alpha access and special black marine armor in the full version of the game.

Here’s the slightly strange part though: You can only buy the game through their website, they’re not selling it over Steam, for what I can only assume is to maximise the amount of money they make, instead of just royalties after Valve take their cut. They’re also not clear on whether the game is going to be released through Steam or not.

You can pre-order the game here.

If you love Team Fortress 2’s class based team combat, and you haven’t played Natural Selection before, this should be right up your alley.

(Oh, I should probably mention, I have had my author account here for a while now, but finally have an excuse to write something. I am Cup of Squirrels, long time pal of Daedalus and occasional actor in his videos, rogue, slacker, and existentialist extraordinaire! I hope to write more here in the future!)

Besides the fact that it makes a lot of TF2 players angry, what with all the duplicate unlocks everyone’s getting, the new system is also wasteful in terms of energy.

I counted roughly 350 achievement_idle rooms at 3:00 PM today, most of which were full and had probably on average 12 people in each room. That’s an estimated 4200 people who are in these game rooms idling, doing absolutely nothing but leaving the computer on to gain achievements in most cases. If each one of those people were to commit 24 hours to letting their computer idle that would equal $3,113.11 worth of electric according to my figures. That’s in a single day, but what if users were to idle for a full week? Well that would cost them $21,791.75 over seven days.

I think everyone would have been better off if Valve just stuck with the old system for this update, and worked out the kinks in the new system while everyone was enjoying their earned unlocks.

Two patches and the random drop generator is still horrible. Where the hell is my huntsman?

Turns out the April Fools joke back then was all about making people believe that Jarate was a fake unlock.

    How ironic.

There’s not much I need to do here other than point you in the right direction. In this case, that would be Kotaku.

Suffice to say, if you actually sent in any of the various mail-in applications the different classes seem to be ordering their unlocks from these days, you would have recieved a reply.

Kinda makes me want to apply for Jarate.

There are two sorts of men in this world: the sort with blood pouring out of a hole in their heads, and the sort holding the Ambassador. It has the ammo count of a revolver and the pinpoint accuracy of a sniper rifle, even at long range. (But remember, a gun that packs this much heat needs to cool off between shots, so make every shot count.)

With its rosewood grip and likeness of your enemy’s mother (please send photo) engraved on the barrel, the Ambassador is eight motherloving pounds of steel your enemies won’t want to negotiate with.

Okay…so it’s a revolver that dishes out more hurt but needs to cool down between shots.

So, who can guess what went up on the Spy update for day five? I wonder…

    Meet the Spy?!??!??! No WAY.

    Oh, and the Achievement names/pictures.

To be fair to Valve, they kept their tact by acknowledging the leak twice on the page. First, in video title (Act surprised.), and second in an Achievement of their own:

    valve-corporate

    EDIT:

So, with the new (more detailed) video, we can now see what all those signs on the wall say. Included among them (thanks, Pentadact):

So, Meet The Spy appears to have burst into flames been leaked early.

    Original. Funny. Mysterious.

Observations after the break. (Watch it first.)
